Program Objectives -- To train young
boys and girls in umpiring baseball or softball games. They
will gain confidence in themselves and take on quite a bit of
responsibility.
-
Eligibility - Umpires must be at least
13 years old. New umpires must attend 2 of 3 clinics that are
offered in early April. Returning umpires need to attend one
of the three clinics.
-
Costs -- There are no fees for this program.
Umpires get paid $20 for baseball and softball games.
Payments are typically made on Sunday evening.
-
Time Commitment - Games are every day
of the week. Umpires work only the days that fit their personal
schedule.
-
Locations - Baseball games are at Walsh
or Jane Lownes. Softball games are at ETR, Scenic or New Netherwood
fields.
-
Tentative Calendar - The season will
begin mid-April and run through the end of June. Weeknight games
begin at 5:45 PM (baseball) or 6:15 PM (softball). The weekend
games can start as early as 9:00 AM and run until as late at
6:00 PM.
-
Equipment - All umpires will be provided
with a counter. The mask and chest protectors are left at the
baseball fields. Umpires who do the softball games will also
receive their own mask.
-
Miscellaneous Information -- Scheduling
is done on Sunday evenings for the games Monday through Sunday.
Most communication is done via email. New umpires will begin
by calling the bases for the baseball games and will eventually
be behind the plate by the end of the season. Typically the
senior umpires do the softball games.
